WANDA Mom Honored at UCSF Graduation

Our wonderful WANDA mom, Lucia Alvarez, shared exciting news with us about her journey at San Francisco State University. As a graduating senior, she has been selected to receive the College Hood. Congratulations Lucia! Message from Lucia: “Thanks WANDA for being part of my professional journey! I hope that when you share my story, I could inspire other moms to pursue their dreams. Thank you so much!!”

We are thrilled to congratulate EDvance senior Lucia Alvarez for being selected as this year’s College of Health and Social Sciences Undergraduate Hood for the 2018 Commencement Ceremony. As part of a longstanding tradition, each of SF State’s six academic colleges selects one undergraduate and one graduate student for the honor of representing their fellow students during the University’s Commencement ceremony by wearing their college’s academic hood. This is an incredible acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication Lucia has made in her pursuit of a BA degree. After immigrating to the United States from Nicaragua in 2006, Lucia started her career as a substitute teacher in a bilingual Head Start classroom. For over a decade, Lucia enrolled in ESL and transfer level courses while working full time and raising her son. As an SF State student, Lucia excelled academically while serving as a Lead Teacher in a Head Start program and serving as mentor to many of her classmates. We are incredibly honored to have Lucia represent the field of early care and education through this prestigious recognition.
