WANDA Mom Spotlight: Shermagne Gutierrez, Cohort 17

It seems like I’ve always been in a fight-or-flight state of mind. Growing up, I witnessed my mom experience domestic abuse from my father. As the eldest child, I was often left with the responsibility of taking care of my siblings. From an early age, I knew that when I was able to make my own decisions about relationships, I wasn’t going to let this happen to me. And yet, three years ago, I found myself pregnant with twin boys and fleeing from my own domestic abuse situation. It was a wake-up call for me. I knew that I needed to do better and make better choices – not just for myself, but for my children.

I’m currently enrolled at Skyline College in their esthetician program. It was here where I connected with Julie Hong, a counselor from SparkPoint who has encouraged me to shoot for the stars. Her support has been a game-changer. Miss Julie was also the one who told me about WANDA and encouraged me to apply. The WANDA program has helped me figure out what scholarships I’m eligible for and how to apply for financial aid so I can afford to continue my education.

When my mom passed away, even though she had financial assets, she couldn’t take them to the grave with her. I built up this idea that money comes and money goes – so why should I save if I can’t take it with me? Thanks to WANDA, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to save, and they’ve given me the tools and confidence to start. I was even able to set up bank accounts for my boys.

Before enrolling at Skyline and being introduced to the WANDA program, I felt really alone. A few of the organizations who I reached out to for support were really condescending, but at WANDA they genuinely care and want to see you succeed. We’re able to come together with no judgment because we’re all in the same boat. This group of women is truly incredible.

WANDA has shifted my mindset, too; I’ve found  self-motivation and affirmations go a long way. I’ve been giving myself permission to dream as if my goals have already been accomplished. Simply deciding that this is what I want and it’s happening now. Through the confidence I’ve gained, I’ve been able to shift from a scarcity mindset to one that is of gratitude and self-worth.

I’m so grateful for WANDA because it gives you the time, knowledge, encouragement, and opportunity to save towards your goal. I’m proud to share that I now have my own apartment, and I’ve been here for almost a year. This year, I’m on track to graduate from Skyline with a 3.9 GPA and have plans to transfer to the University of San Francisco to pursue nursing.

If you isolate yourself and listen to those who don’t believe in you, you’re never going to be able to change your life. Thankfully, I’m an optimist. I have only learned valuable lessons from my upbringing and own challenges, and they really have been blessings in disguise. These hurdles have really pushed me to keep my faith and keep believing in myself.

Thanks to Miss Julie and WANDA, I’ve found the resources and people who really care to help make a better life for myself and my boys. I’m so blessed to have this opportunity.
